Dr Maximilian Flormann: Automated Driving – From Vision to Reality

Automated driving is one of the defining mobility topics of our time. Dr Maximilian Flormann takes you on a journey from the first concepts to the systems already in use today. You will learn which key components make automated driving possible – from sensors and artificial intelligence to connectivity – and how the different levels of automation, from driver assistance to Level 4/5, are clearly distinguished.

One part of the lecture will focus on the RAION research vehicle, a Level 4 demonstrator for public transport. In Braunschweig, this vehicle is used to test functions and concepts for driverless mobility in real road traffic – including a safety architecture with multiple redundancies.

Topics covered in the lecture include:

• What is already driving autonomously today – and what is not yet possible

• Sensors, AI and communication: how the key technologies interact

• Levels of automation: definitions, standards and use cases

• First-hand research: RAION as a test vehicle for highly automated shuttle concepts, reaching speeds of up to 50 km/h in regular traffic

• Opportunities, limitations and the next steps towards everyday use

Dr Maximilian Flormann heads the “Vehicle Mechatronics & Communication” working group at the Institute of Automotive Engineering at TU Braunschweig. Among other projects, he has been involved in public demonstration drives. In podcasts and research projects, he discusses the transformation of the automobile, automated driving and the infrastructure required for future mobility.
