For these concerts, chief conductor Nicholas Milton brings a truly cheerful symphony: Johannes Brahms' Summer Symphony, his second, which captures in sounds the Austrian landscape that the Hamburg native enjoyed at the time. As if you could hear blue sky, sun and colorful flowers...

The concert opens with Ludwig van Beethoven's third Leonore Overture, which basically depicts the entire opera “Fidelio” in miniature. Or as Wagner remarked: “Far from merely providing a musical introduction to the drama, it presents it to us in a more complete and moving way…” .

And Pyotr Tchaikovsky's wonderful Rococo Variations, dedicated to the great role model Mozart, are actually an extremely finely crafted cello concerto.
