This 1:5 scale Porsche 924/944 GTP LM brings Le Mans straight into the display case. The full-size car made its debut in the 1981 24 Hours of Le Mans with Walter Röhrl and Jürgen Barth driving, finishing seventh overall. The model includes many details that reflect its endurance-racing role: the low front end, the wide rear section and the familiar racing markings. The 1:5 scale chosen matches the wind-tunnel models which Porsche produced to test vehicle aerodynamics.
The model was built by model maker Lothar Wünsche. Early on, Wünsche knew he wanted to build a Porsche model at 1:5 scale – the same size as the wind tunnel originals. From his home in the Lausitz hill country, in the former GDR, he travelled 120 kilometres to the city of Most in the Czech Republic and met with the Porsche team during a race there. He made the car entirely from scratch – from the frame and bodywork to the many technical details inside. To date, Wünsche has built more than 20 of these 1:5 models, each with up to 1,600 individual parts.
