Order in Miniature

Scale indicates how much a model vehicle has been reduced compared with the original. A model at 1:18 scale is one eighteenth of the size of the real vehicle. Larger models can reproduce many details closely, and often include moving parts such as doors. Though modern production methods have improved scale accuracy overall, it remains the case that as the scale reduces, the harder it becomes to accurately replicate certain details like for like. As such a model is always, to a large extent, a design of its own.
Scales create consistency and make comparison easier. They allow vehicles to be shown side by side in a realistic way, for example in miniature scenes or display cases. For many collectors, scale is a key choice, not least because accessories such as figures and buildings are made to match.
How Closely does a Model Match the Original?
A model is not only a miniature, it is a designed object in its own right. For example, at smaller scales, thin body panels or fine mirrors cannot simply be reduced in exact proportions without becoming too fragile, or almost invisible. Parts, proportions and details are therefore often made slightly thicker, simplified or highlighted with colour.
So every model is more than a copy, it is an interpretation. It translates a full-size vehicle into a form that is manageable, stable and visually appealing, and one shaped by the technology of its time, the design preferences of the period and the audience it was made for.
