Model Making in Transition

From Master Pattern to Digital Model

In the past, miniatures began life as hand-made master patterns: model makers carved original forms from wood, wax or metal. From these unique pieces, moulds were created in which white metal parts were reproduced by spin casting. The results were not perfectly to scale, but deliberately stylised and marked by a recognisable personal touch. This individuality shaped the character of each model vehicle brand.

With plastic injection moulding and zinc die-casting, efficiency moved into focus. Developing a detailed 1:18 scale model with moving parts can today cost up to 100,000 US dollars. A mould has to pay off, which means high production volumes. As models are produced in large series, production costs fall and model making becomes a modular system. Basic forms that can be turned into many variants are popular, for example a Ford Transit as an ambulance, delivery van or fire engine. Individual interpretation and small hand-made irregularities gave way to precision and interchangeability. Only a few small manufacturers still cultivate the old craft with a lot of time, dedication and artistic sensitivity.

Today, digital tools take over more and more of the steps involved in creating a model vehicle. CAD (computer aided design), CNC (computer numerical control), 3D scanning, 3D printing and AI make it possible to produce miniatures accurate to a hundredth of a millimetre. Yet this gain in precision often goes hand in hand with a loss of individuality and of a brand’s own characteristic “handwriting”.

Fun fact

Some small-series manufacturers who produce so-called “one-off” models – unique pieces – spend several months, just on development. A 1:8 display miniature, for example, may comprise several hundred individual parts. Building the finished model can then take more than a year, with prices reaching five-figure sums.
